Information about Madeira

Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic, situated between the Azores and the Canaries. There are only two inhabited islands — Porto Santo and Madeira. The last is called the island of flowers and thousand faces. There are comfortable marinas and warm climate here where you can sail all year round. We will tell you the most important things about the yacht rent in Madeira.

Why do yachtsmen prefer Madeira?

During the trip around, the island can sometimes be misty or show the landscapes of extraordinary beauty. Yacht passages are short and non fatigue and on the coast.

There is always something interesting to do:

  • walk along residential, non-touristic villages (the terrain is unusual for a European eye — plantations of bananas and reeds, gardens irrigated with canals, white squat houses with red roofs);
  • try the local cuisine (for the famous local wine wondrous bananas-pineapples and bananas-passion fruits are served, as for the dinner, the fried black saber-fish which lives only in the local waters is worth trying);
  • rest on the beach (there is only one natural beach with dark brown volcanic sand and two artificial ones, with sand from the Sahara);
  • visit the Se Cathedral in the city of Funchal (its walls are made of extensive lava and the ceiling is encrusted with ivory);
  • go to the Funchal grocery market (the most interesting department is the fish one, where mountains of seafood and for example, a huge cut across tuna, or the mentioned above saber-fish are for sale).

Carnivals and the Columbus Festivals are held here and at the end of September hundreds of participants of the Madeira 950 regatta which starts in Livorno, Italy, arrive on the island.

What do you need to know about yacht charter in Madeira?

There is an international airport which is an attraction itself. Half of the takeoff runway stands on a huge reinforced concrete pillars 50m high. People come here to arrange a cruise around the island or to use it as a start before crossing the Atlantic.

Renting yachts in Madeira and in neighboring Porto Santo is very popular, so it’s better to book a vessel for at least six months. There are five convenient marinas on two inhabited islands, the construction of new wharves is going on in Funchal. Yachtsmen often prefer the southern coast of Madeira because in the northern one the trade winds blow and rains occur more often.

The price of hiring a yacht depends on how much in advance it is booked. Please, leave a request for a vessel on our website. The Sailica manager will contact you to answer all the questions and to help in organizing the trip.
